Treatment for Anxiety

Do You Often Experience Overwhelming Anxiety?

Is anxiety limiting your life? Perhaps you find yourself shying away from certain situations or people, in fear that they’ll trigger heightened anxiety. Maybe you have difficulty sleeping, lying in bed night after night worrying about things from the past or challenges you may face in the future. You might struggle to get through each day, plagued by the feeling that something bad is going to happen. Perhaps you suddenly feel emotional and overwhelmed by small, trivial things that didn't bother you before. Do you worry that anxiety has taken over your life and fear you’ll never be able to feel normal and happy again?

Living with excessive anxiety can be a stressful, frustrating and lonely experience. You may have goals and ambitions, but continually fail to reach them. Perhaps anxiety is clouding your ability to make decisions and you move through each day in a persistent state of apprehension or fear. Or, it might be that anxiety only affects some areas of your life while not others. You may be at a loss to explain why you feel anxious at certain times and beat yourself up for feeling this way. Maybe you’re consumed by the fear that you’re going to have a full-blown anxiety attack and feel powerless to stop it. Don't you wish there was a way to relieve the symptoms of anxiety, allowing you to feel more relaxed and in control of your life?

Anxiety Is Increasingly Common In Today’s Hectic World

Some anxiety is normal, in fact, we need it. It's a biological inheritance from our ancestors designed to keep us safe. It can help us to meet important deadlines at work, score a goal or perform better in all sorts of situations. However, excessive anxiety is different and is often caused by emotional needs not being adequately met. Today, we live in a world where this is becoming increasingly difficult and, if you’re suffering from anxiety symptoms, you are not alone. Statistically, at least 20 percent of people in the UK and Ireland suffer from anxiety and stress disorders. In reality, however, it’s likely that countless more are suffering in silence, unable or too embarrassed to seek help.

Given the fast-paced nature of today’s culture, many people feel like their lives are spiralling out of control. Our expectations of success and performance are at an all-time high, and many of us feel like we’re constantly failing to meet the demands that have come to define our lives. With so much of our existence dictated by the touch of a button, it can feel like we’re expected to be highly responsive and always available. We put pressure on ourselves to be as efficient as the technology we use and, when we can’t keep up, we feel frustrated. It’s easy to fall into a pattern of self-doubt and despair when negative thoughts take over. While it’s not surprising that today’s society has become a breeding ground for anxiety, there is hope for relief.

Effective Anxiety Treatment Can Help Calm Your Anxiety – Today

When we feel overwhelming anxiety, our emotional needs are often not being met. This is why I take a therapy approach that focuses on helping you find healthy ways to meet these needs. Using a combination of evidence-based, solution-focused therapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Hypnotherapy, Mindfulness and Human Givens Psychotherapy, I can provide you with personalised treatment that addresses your individual needs, helping you to overcome excessive stress and anxiety as quickly as possible.

By incorporating the most up-to-date psychological knowledge into how the mind, body and emotions interact, our sessions together will provide you with effective tools and insights you can use to start feeling better right from the first session. Together we can pinpoint the areas of your life that are troubling you, and focus on practical ways to help you find relief.

In the comfortable environment of our sessions, I’ll help you move on from your past, rather than endlessly dwelling on it. You can learn how to relax, think more clearly and find solutions to resolve and manage current and ongoing stress triggers. With guidance and support, you'll learn practical, effective tools to manage anxiety to bring you both immediate and long-term relief. We will identify and work toward achievable goals, so that you can experience measurable and noticeable improvements in how you feel, and live with more confidence, direction and ease.

You still may have questions or concerns about anxiety counselling…

I’ve been for counselling before and it helped a bit. What’s different about your approach?

My approach to helping people with anxiety differs from other forms in that it’s brief, positive and future-focused. Recent evidence shows that solution-focused therapy is far more effective than traditional forms of talk therapy. This is due to its emphasis on using individuals’ strengths, resources and past achievements to empower them to incite change.

In our sessions, I’ll help you to feel more relaxed. Together, we’ll address stressful thoughts and feelings in a hands-on, practical way. Some people benefit from learning what’s going on in their body during bouts of anxiety, while others need to learn new coping skills to help them with challenging thoughts and emotions. Whatever your circumstances, we’ll work together to develop a strategy tailored to you as an individual, so you can cope with anxiety and feel more in control.

I’ve heard that anxiety therapy can take a long time and is expensive.

Many forms of talk therapy embody a “things have to get worse before they get better” approach, meaning it can often take a long time trawling through your past before significant change is felt. If your anxiety is caused by a past traumatic event, I can help you neutralise the emotions around trauma memories without you having to relive the event. In fact, you don’t even need to share the specific details with me for this technique to work.

Using a future-focused approach, you’ll learn to hone in on the things that are already working in your life, identify the barriers to getting your emotional needs met and make empowered changes as quickly as possible. On average, I see people for between one and six sessions in total (typically three to four), although sometimes more sessions may be needed depending on your circumstances.

I feel stupid asking for help to overcome anxiety.

Anxiety is extremely common, and unlike some illnesses, doesn’t discriminate between gender, age or social class. Often, symptoms of anxiety, such as circling thoughts, excessive sweating and overpowering emotions, can seem at odds with the rest of your life.

You may have a comfortable living situation, a job you enjoy and a loving family, but nevertheless find yourself plagued by symptoms of anxiety. You may struggle to understand where your symptoms are coming from, or even feel guilty for experiencing them, thinking they’re a form of weakness or that there are other people who have more difficult lives than you.

There’s nothing wrong with needing a helping hand now and again. If anxiety has become a problem for you, you can do something about it and, thankfully, there are effective strategies available to help you cope.

Brief solution focused anxiety therapy can help you realise that, no matter your situation, your life is worth living well. With that in mind, taking actionable steps toward treating anxiety is the best thing you can do for yourself and your loved ones.
